Case Studies

View the pages listed below to review a project synopsis and photographs of several recently completed GCI projects.

Inspections

Florida Power & Light
FPL awarded Gibraltar Chimney International a 5-yr blanket service contract to provide maintenance repairs for the (30) stacks and chimneys at each of the (11) Generating Stations in their Florida system. The contract was awarded to GCI after evaluating capabilities, price, safety and service.
Bethlehem Steel Corporation
GCI's inspection of the NFF-CS Flare Burner Stack at Bethlehem Steel's Lackawanna Plant identified heavy corrosion and plate buckling in the upper section of the stack. Ultrasonic thickness ("UT") measurements indicated that corrosion was primarily confined to the tip section of the structure.
Doe Run Peru
Working in conjunction with Doe Run Peru and Fluor Daniel, CCI and Gibraltar Chimney performed an inspection of the massive structure.
AES Corp.
Gibraltar Chimney has performed inspections and maintenance repairs at several AES facilities, including the 612'-6" tall reinforced concrete chimney serving the 625 MW coal fired boiler at the AES Somerset - Kintigh Generating Station.
NYC Department of Sanitation
When New York City Sanitation Engineers identified damage to roof covers and hazardous conditions at their Southwest Brooklyn and Hamilton Avenue Incinerator Plants, Gibraltar Chimney International was contracted to perform Emergency Repairs.

Steel Stacks and Liners

Cargill Fertilizer, Inc.
As a part of environmental improvement efforts, Cargill Fertilizer contracted Warren Environment Inc. to design and build a 300' tall odor stack at their facility south of Tampa, Florida.
PEI Power
The recent increase in power generating demands has resulted in a surge in construction of Gas Turbine Power Systems at new and existing facilities throughout the United States.
Lehigh Cement
The installation of new kilns at the Lehigh Cement - Allentown Plant required the installation of two new waste exhaust gas stacks at the facility. The 230' tall steel stacks were a dual wall design.
Jamestown Utilities
Like many smaller municipal power generators, Jamestown Utilities was faced with the challenge of meeting increased generating demands for their clients. Their solution was the construction of a new plant powered by a Deltak HRSG unit.
NYC Department of Corrections
The Keyspan Energy Utilities Upgrade Project at the Rikers Island Correctional Facility included requirements for replacing and/or retrofitting existing boilers, installing new ductwork and erecting a new steel stack.
Arizona Public Service - Cholla Steam Electric Station
As a part of environmental upgrades at the Arizona Public Service Cholla Plant, APS installed a wet-scrubber system which necessitated retro-fitting the Unit #1 chimney to accommodate the operational changes.

Demolition

NYC Department of Sanitation
Gibraltar Chimney was contracted to demolish two 200' tall radial brick chimneys for the New York City — Department of Sanitation. The chimneys were vintage turn-of-the-century structures, with massive walls, architectural details and a full height steel corset on the freestanding firebrick liner.
Capitol Cement Corporation
An inspection of the No. 9 Kiln Stack at the Capitol Cement Plant identified severe corrosion of the steel shell throughout the upper half of the structure. Gibraltar Chimney dismantled the corroded portion and erected a new 75' stack section complete with a CEMS platform and ladder.
Brunswick General Hospital
The Facilities Manager at Brunswick General Hospital was faced with a dilemma. A redundant boiler chimney was in an unsafe and potentially hazardous condition, however, cost estimates for the demolition exceeded the hospitals budget.
Dormitory Authority of NYS
The installation of new boilers at the Mid-Hudson Psychiatric Hospital meant the 150' tall radial brick chimney was no longer required. With the chimney located immediately adjacent to the boilerhouse, demolition using mechanical methods such as hydraulic breakers or similar techniques was not possible.
